About this Event
View map Free EventThe UVM Symphony Orchestra presents Hidden Figures, a program honoring composers whose voices were too often overlooked or forgotten. Ethel Smyth’s bold overture to The Wreckers reflects one of Britain’s pioneering women in music, while Florence Price’s eloquent Symphony No. 3 testifies to the perseverance of an African American composer who fought for recognition against overwhelming odds. Scott Joplin’s ragtime, famously used in The Sting, omitted the composer’s name in published music. Hans Zimmer’s score to Hidden Figures celebrates unsung heroes of science, while Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6—charged with brilliance and unspoken emotion—hints at struggles he could never fully reveal. John Williams’ music from Jurassic Park brings the program to a triumphant close, capturing the awe, wonder, and boundless imagination of human discovery.
Two performances -- 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm
Conducted by Yutaka Kono. Free and open to the public.
