Adriana Portela, the Director of Banda Didá, is a musician and a resistance movement leader. She is the first Black female drum conductor in the history of Salvador, Brazil, and leads Brazil’s first all-female Afro-Brazilian (Samba Reggae) percussion band. Her mission is to combat Brazil’s long history of racism and anti-feminism with the power of music, community, and education. For twenty-five years, Portela and her band have been teaching young black women the art of drumming. Banda DiDa has been instrumental in challenging the gender and racial norms deeply ingrained in Brazil’s Evangelical and machismo culture, contributing to a significant shift in societal attitudes.
