Diseases are complex ecological systems. Nearly all pathogens infect multiple host species, and all host species are susceptible to multiple pathogens. Because host species differ in their biology and are often interacting, what species are present can impact disease risk within a system. Here, I present the different forms that the biodiversity-disease risk relationship can take, and examples to show how this impacts disease risk in important human systems.
