Classics of the Foreign Film expands its survey of acclaimed foreign films beyond the heyday of the art house theater movement with a screening and discussion of Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer’s silent masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), renowned French poet, playwright, and avant-garde filmmaker Jean Cocteau’s reworking of the Greek myth Orpheus (1950), and minimalist Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s profoundly humanist Where Is the Friend’s House? (1987). Discuss the critical legacy of art films, the national and cultural contexts in which they were created, and their production and reception history. Light refreshments provided. Held in Burlington.
