About Bryant Terry
Bryant Terry is a chef, artist, author, and publisher whose work centers food as a powerful tool for creativity, culture, and community connection. Trained as a chef and historian, his multidisciplinary practice blends cooking, art, and storytelling to explore themes of resilience, cultural memory, and social change.
From 2015 to 2022, Terry served as the inaugural Chef-in-Residence at San Francisco’s Museum of the African Diaspora, where he developed innovative programming that connected food, health, farming, art, and activism. His work has been featured at institutions nationwide, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Harvard Graduate School of Design, and The Hammer Museum at UCLA.
Terry is the author of five critically acclaimed cookbooks and editor of Black Food, widely praised as one of the most influential American cookbooks of 2021. He is also the founder and editor-in-chief of 4 Color Books, an imprint of Ten Speed Press/Penguin Random House, where he collaborates with leading creatives of color to produce visually striking books rooted in food and culture.
A recipient of a James Beard Award, an NAACP Image Award, and an Art of Eating Prize, Terry brings a deep commitment to equity, creativity, and community into every space he enters. Through cooking demonstrations, conversations, and shared meals, his work invites audiences to gather, learn, and imagine more just and joyful food systems.
