In celebration of Black History Month, UVM Dining’s Local Meets Global series welcomes Kismayo Kitchen for its third installment on February 25 at Central Campus Dining, starting at 4:30 PM (while supplies last)

Kismayo Kitchen, Vermont’s first Somali restaurant, was founded by the late Ahmed Omar, a young Somali refugee who migrated to the U.S. at 17 and later moved to Vermont with his wife, Anisa Mohammed. Inspired by his love of cooking and entrepreneurial spirit, Omar opened Kismayo Kitchen to share the bold spices, slow-cooked stews, and vibrant flavors of Somali cuisine—with an American twist. The menu blends traditional Somali dishes with comforting Italian and American favorites, from fragrant rice and chicken to Philly cheesesteaks and crispy samosas.

Since Omar’s passing, Anisa has carried on his legacy, infusing every dish with the same passion and love that first brought Kismayo Kitchen to life. For her, food is more than sustenance—it’s a connection to family, culture, and community.

This Local Meets Global event honors Omar’s story while giving the UVM community a taste of Somali tradition during #BlackHistoryMonth. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome, with access via Meal Swipes or a door price of $12.70 (Retail Points, CAT$cratch, or Credit/Debit).

Through Local Meets Global, UVM Dining partners with local food entrepreneurs like Anisa to foster economic growth, introduce unique culinary experiences, and align with our mission to offer innovative, diverse, and sustainable food solutions.
