If you’re looking for hope these days, please join us for a rich conversation with Alan Weisman, bestselling author, journalist and professor, about his new novel Hope Dies Last (2025).

In a vibrant tour that ranges from Indigenous knowledge about seaweed-based grains to recently developed microbial technology that can replace synthetic fertilizer, Weisman’s new book spotlights scores of deeply inspiring individuals and their work.

Weisman’s work has for decades provided deep reflection on humans, our environment, and the relationships between them. His 2007 novel The World Without Us explores what would happen to the planet if humans suddenly disappeared. An international bestseller, it was named best nonfiction book of 2007 by Time Magazine and Entertainment Weekly.

Weisman, a UVM Gund Institute for Environment Macmillan Visting Scholar, will join UVM faculty member and Gund Institute fellow Rachelle Gould, and others, for an insightful conversation followed by an interactive “hopefest” focused on connecting with others (over snacks!) to consider hope-infused possibilities for action.
