The black ash, a culturally significant tree species to the Indigenous peoples of the Northeast, is also important to regional ecosystems.

On September 13, the Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program (VT UCF) is hosting a gathering at the North Branch Nature Center, Montpelier (713 Elm St.) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for anyone interested in learning about the black ash tree and its role in Vermont ecosystems. Joanne Garton, VT UCF, will lead the event, providing insights into this tree, its role in local ecosystems, the threats it is facing from the emerald ash borer and what is being done in the state to ensure its future.

Although free to attend, space is limited to 30 participants, so registration at https://go.uvm.edu/blackash is required. The deadline to register is September 11 or until all spaces are filled. If needing a disability-related accommodation to participate, please contact Ginger Nickerson at ginger.nickerson@uvm.edu by August 22.

Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to join a guided walk to a small ash stand, offering a firsthand look at these remarkable trees in their natural habitat.
