https://www.uvm.edu/gund/gund-eventsBrittany Mosher will discuss wildlife diseases which can have far-reaching impacts on wildlife species, ecosystems, local and global economies, public health outcomes, food security, and more. Most wildlife diseases (and their impacts) are managed reactively, reducing opportunities for management success as well as for innovation and cross-sector collaboration. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is prion disease that is 100% lethal to deer, elk, and moose, and is spreading rapidly in wild white-tailed deer populations in Pennsylvania. CWD has not yet been detected in Vermont, providing an opportunity for both for proactive management focused on prevention and for developing proactive OneHealth partnerships across state and federal wildlife, agriculture, and public health sectors. I will share the decision-science approach we are using to facilitate the development of a multi-agency CWD prevention and response plan in Vermont, highlighting the challenges, opportunities, and next steps.
