Exhibition Description:

E-spirit. For the longest time, I thought that the popular retail company Esprit was both pronounced and spelled as “E-spirit”. You might think this show is about more than it is, which is a show of paintings and books. I see this show as something akin to misremembering something and the various images that flit through your mind as you try to remember it correctly. But inherently, memory is fallible, right Proust? When I started thinking about creating a new body of work, I started filtering in my head all of the various imagery that pops in and out of my sketches and drawings. A dancing corkscrew, water lilies, dragons and faces. All of these signs are signifiers of my interest in painting “what I want to paint”. My approach to painting is the subject of the show. Thin, thick, loose, tight, dark, light and everything in between.

Micah Wood (b. 1988, Bedford, Iowa) is an artist living and working in Montpelier, Vermont. He works in a variety of media including painting, sculpture and performance. The imagery found throughout Wood’s work oscillates between the physical act of painting to automatic drawings and observational sketches. Wood’s paintings lie at the nexus of abstraction and figuration and seek to create a distinctive vision of his environment. Recent solo and group exhibitions include Cassandra Cassandra, (Toronto, ON), Egyptian Arts and Antiques, (Los Angeles, CA), Héctor Escandon, (Mexico CIty, Mexico), and the Fondation Des Etats-Unis, (Paris, France). He was a co-director of City Limits Gallery in Oakland, CA  where he organized several solo and group exhibitions.
