About this Event
The University of Vermont Symphony Orchestra presents an evening of compelling orchestral repertoire, highlighting both distinguished solo performance and works that reflect diverse cultural traditions and national identity.
The program opens with Clarinet Concerto No. 1 by Carl Maria von Weber, performed by concerto competition winner Megan Solleder. A defining work in the clarinet repertoire, the concerto combines lyrical refinement with virtuosic brilliance, offering a vivid showcase for the soloist.
The orchestra continues with Malagueña by Ernesto Lecuona, whose music draws on the rich rhythmic and expressive traditions of Cuba and Spain. This work brings a vibrant, dance-like energy to the program.
America 250! by Gwyneth Walker follows, a contemporary work based on American folk melodies. As part of a series of performances and premieres across the country, this piece offers a celebratory reflection on the nation’s musical heritage.
The second half of the program features three movements—First, Second, and Fourth—from Symphony No. 9, “From the New World” by Antonín Dvořák. Composed during the composer’s time in the United States, the symphony draws inspiration from American musical idioms while maintaining the structural depth of the European symphonic tradition.
The concert concludes with music from Titanic, composed by James Horner and arranged by John Moss, bringing a cinematic and emotionally resonant close to the evening.
Yutaka Kono, conductor. Free and open to the public.
