The highlight of the Spring performance by the UVM Concert Band is the first performance of “Ode to Bango” by Grant Mathews, Class of 2026. Grant is a music major with a concentration in Music Composition and Theory and a minor in Physics.  While at UVM Grant has played in the UVM Jazz Ensemble, Latin Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Band.  The piece is based on an original scale (called the “Bango Scale” in honor of a former classmate) and is influenced by much of the music Grant has studied and performed at UVM.  Other pieces include “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” one of the staples of the wind literature based on the Korean folk song “Arirang”, and “Dancing in the Wind” a piece inspired by Japanese art of the late 19th Century. The Concert Band is conducted by Prof. D. Thomas Toner.
