Grammy Award-nominated composer Clarice Assad, and vocal soloists Danielle Buonaiuto and Nikola Printz, share insights about Assad’s new orchestral work Summerland based on the historic Weybridge, VT couple Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake. This discussion is hosted by Vermont Symphony Orchestra Artistic Advisor Matt LaRocca and is in advance of the VSO’s concert at the Flynn on September 18 featuring the premiere of Assad’s work. Summerland is commissioned by Vermont Humanities and Vermont Arts Council.

Weybridge, Vermont in February 1807 is small, cold, lonely, and beautiful. As an unwed woman with few prospects, Sylvia Drake resides with and cares for her sister’s rambunctious family. But today the house is abuzz awaiting a guest—Charity Bryant. So opens Charity and Sylvia by Tillie Walden, the award-winning, Vermont-based cartoonist and author of Spinning and On a Sunbeam.

Created by Walden from archival materials at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History in Middlebury, and other primary and secondary sources, Charity and Sylvia is a groundbreaking biography that is also the story of 19th century America.

Join us in John Dewey Lounge, Old Mill 325 for this special presentation from Tillie Walden, in conversation with Coco Moseley, Executive Director of the Sheldon Museum, about the creation of this book. The talk is free and open to all – students, faculty, staff, and the general public!

After the program, join the world premiere of Composer Clarice Assad’s work, Summerland, also based on the story of Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake. It will be performed at the Flynn Center that same evening, Friday, September 18. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at www.flynnvt.org, student discounts are available.

Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets to make yourself comfortable.

Taking place right in the heart of campus, this show features 20+ Theatre and Dance performers utilizing sound and movement to create a unique project that is built around the iconic UVM location. This frenetic/quiet, chaotic/still, neurotic/relaxing, fun/serious, and very thoughtful performance investigates the “blather” of our everyday lives. Amidst the noise and confusion, is there room to find each other and connect? How do we strive to find communication, quiet, and peace? What is there beyond the noise – is there only “blah”?

Directed by Paul Besaw. Assistant directors/choreographers Lily Horowitz ’27 and Noah Saltzman ’26. Original sound/music creation led by Koa Ritz ’24.

The project is supported by the UVM School of the Arts, and therefore is tied to Imagined Futures, the 2026-27 SOA theme. The project is also supported by the UVM Humanities Center, and therefore is tied to silence/noise, the 2026-27 Humanities Center theme.

Sponsored by UVM's Humanities Center, the event coincides with the many nationwide celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and brings together award-winning scholars of religion in early America from Harvard University, Princeton University, Washington University, University of Pennsylvania, University of North Carolina, and other research institutions to share their groundbreaking and innovative work on this topic and time period.

The event consists of two roundtables discussing religion in colonial America and in the early national period, followed by a plenary from Catherine Brekus, the Charles Warren Professor of the History of Religion in America at Harvard Divinity School. Her talk will be followed by a reception open to attendees.

This conference is free and open to the public. All attendees must register.
