The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources’ study abroad experience in Costa Rica is the only faculty-led semester abroad program at UVM! Running for over 25 years in Costa Rica, this program integrates academic content across the biological and social sciences with the real-world challenges and opportunities faced by a rapidly developing Latin American country with unparalleled biodiversity.

As part of an integrative capstone experience, students engage in a service-learning component in which they apply the knowledge they've gained to a community-identified sustainable development project on the Osa Peninsula.

Artist Statement

Visual art has been a part of my life since early childhood and it was the twists and turns of life that fashioned this path for me. It was a matter of accepting it rather than any conscious, deliberate choice. I view any art form as a means of self-expression, a vocation rather than an avocation or a career. This clarification of the purpose of art making I attribute to the late, original jazz pianist and composer, Mal Waldon. My art works are my portrait.

For the 2025-26 academic year, the University explores the future of higher education. Changing demographics, upended federal and state policy, new technologies, evolving student and family expectations, uncertain job markets, rising mistrust of the academy, lessons from Covid, technological innovations, and disagreement about the very purpose of an education all raise questions about higher education’s ends and the means to those ends.

Paul S. Dean and Lauren A. Rivera will argue for and against this year’s Janus Forum resolution: “Obtaining a college degree no longer enables adequate social mobility.”

Dr. Tromp delivers welcoming remarks. A Q&A will follow. ALS and CART services provided. Light refreshments provided.

With moderation provided by Taylor Ricketts, Jane Lubchenco and Heather Tallis will articulate why a fresh approach is needed and present a framework for an ambitious set of principles and policy changes - actions that would set the stage for a new economy with nature at its core.

Attendees will help generate ideas, using the framework to brainstorm new, high-leverage policies to encourage and enable a new economy. Findings will help inform an evidence-based playbook for nature in national policy to be released late in 2026.

About Jane Lubchenco: Jane Lubchenco, Valley Professor of Marine Biology at Oregon State University, is a marine ecologist with scientific and policy expertise in the ocean, biodiversity, climate change, and interactions between the environment and human well-being. She co-founded The Nature Record, an assessment of nature and nature’s benefits in the U.S. She has served in the federal government in a variety of roles, including leading the Climate and Environment team at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (2021-2025) and serving as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

About Heather Tallis: An interdisciplinary scientist and policy advisor, Heather Tallis works to bridge nature, the economy and people's lives. Dr. Tallis partners with governments, businesses, Indigenous communities and others to change the ways we relate to and invest in nature. She co-founded and chairs the Secretariat for The Nature Record and is a Senior Fellow at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

About Taylor Ricketts: Ecologist Taylor Ricketts is Gund Professor at the Rubenstein School and director of UVM’s Gund Institute for Environment. His work centers on the overarching question: How do we meet the needs of people and nature in an increasingly crowded, changing world? Taylor’s research focuses on the economic and health benefits provided to people by forests, wetlands, reefs, and other natural areas. Taylor is co-founder of the Natural Capital Project, a partnership among universities and NGOs to map and value these natural benefits. He has also served as an author and editor for several UN-led efforts to assess global ecosystems and their contributions to human wellbeing.

This year, each college will be holding its own preliminary round. CALS 3MT preliminary round competition will be held on March 26th, 3-5 PM. You may register for CALS preliminary round by submitting a short survey on or before March 12th. Your 1-slide presentation will be due 3-days before the competition (March 23, 11:59 PM). More details about the competition will be sent via email to the registered participants.

The university final will be held on April 15th, as part of UVM Research Week. Competitors from the final will be selected through preliminary rounds held at the college level.

Eligibility

Any currently enrolled PhD student who has begun their dissertation research and can present material based on their original research is eligible to participate in the CALS preliminary round competition to be considered for the finalist slot(s) for the UVM wide competition.

CALS leadership team also encourages thesis-based MS students to participate in the CALS 3MT competition, with the caveat that MS students will not be eligible to compete in the UVM wide competition.

Winners of CALS 3MT competition at both PhD and MS levels will receive prizes. All participants will receive some swag!

Posters: This year we will be accepting a maximum of 280 POSTERS for presentation during our regularly scheduled poster sessions (this includes group posters).

Oral Presentations: This year we will be limiting the number of ORAL PRESENTATIONS we acccept (this includes group presentations). The number of presentations we can accept will be determined by the length of time and the space we have available.

Registration will also be a bit different this year with individual registration forms for each type of presentation! This will help us stay better organized and ideally create a more streamlined process for everyone involved. Additionally, registrations will be capped at one poster/oral/creative presentation per registrant unless the registrant is also participating in a special session.
