Hi it’s John Darnielle and this is the new Mountain Goats bio. Every time you make a record you have to have a new bio and it’s a whole thing. Sometimes you have to have conversations about who’d be a good person to write the bio and other times one of the press people does it and you vet it and it goes through a whole process, but we are eliminating the middle man this time. My other job involves writing prose and I’m regarded as decent enough at it so let’s fast forward through the prelims here.

Days is the something-somethingth album by the Mountain Goats. If that last phrase has a number in it then you will know it has been edited by bad people and you should stop reading now. If it says “something somethingth” then we are still together. Like at least two other tMG albums, specifically Goths and Beat the Champ, Days gets born one day when I have a funny idea. The idea in this case was writing a followup to Goths about the 90s and calling it Grunges. I made this joke on the popular recipes blog “Bluesky” and accompanied it with a brief ad-lib called “Contemplating Pearl Jam in the Carolina Dawn” that I recorded in my back yard.

But the thing about jokes is there’s often something deeper underneath them, most theories of comedy attest to this, don’t get me started. I’d written out a fake track listing for Grunges but then I wrote a poem about Layne Staley in the underworld getting rescued by Orpheus and I started thinking about the past, a popular theme among writers for many years now, and then I got both sad and smitten with wonder by how the past is a place upon which you both can & can’t enact a sort of renovation: can, by changing perspectives; can’t, because you can’t actually move any parts around or change anything.

You think about this stuff as you get older, if you’re lucky enough to be getting older.

We recorded the album at Sear Sound in Manhattan, still managed by the legendary Roberta Findlay, with whom I was fortunate enough to have a talk on the phone during the session; Rob Jost played bass on it; he plays in the pit on Death Becomes Her; he also plays French horn here. The group backing vocals are by Catherine Russsell, Jamie Leonhart, and Carolyn Leonhart; the layered backing vocals on “Hidden Majesty of Later Venom Albums” are by Janis Siegal of the Manhattan Transfer, who was tracking on another floor in the same building while we were at Sear. Giant honor for me to have Janis, I am a huge Manhattan Transfer fan. I called my old friend Matt Nathanson to add vocals to “Candlebox.” He knocked it straight out of the park. Mikaela Davis added harp to “Going to Fennario.” You can read about all this in the credits.

Looking back on what I’ve written I see that “bio” isn’t exactly what you’d call this, as it tells you very little about me, or about Jon Wurster, the best drummer in rock and if you think I’m exaggerating then bless your heart, or about Matt Douglas, who plays guitars and horns & writes horn arrangements and plays keys besides. I played piano and guitar but mainly I’m the singer. Other biographical details are honestly insignificant to my way of thinking, who really cares, but I get that my opinions about this stuff are a little out of step with the zeitgeist.

Following Charles Wesley Godwin’s 2023 critically acclaimed Family Ties — a highly personal, 17-song diary-like LP that was both universally praised and catapulted the West Virginian singer-songwriter to new heights in his career — the rising musician returned in 2025 with a pair of releases: the Lonely Mountain Town EP and Live From The Steel City. The former is a quieter, more contemplative affair than Family Ties, containing some of the most thrilling songs of Godwin’s career. Written principally on the road, Lonely Mountain Town is at its heart a collection of on-the-move snapshots and quiet moments in life set to tune. The latter, Live From The Steel City, is a raucous live record that perfectly encapsulates the energy Charles Wesley Godwin brings to his performances, which last year included a sold out Red Rocks headline debut and a string of dates opening Eric Church’s Free The Machine Tour.

Godwin has been on a steady upward climb following his beloved debut album, 2019’s Seneca. Alongside his longtime band, the Allegheny High, the musician has developed a reputation as a thrilling and beautifully raucous live performer. Godwin has appeared on ESPN’s Sportscenter, performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS Saturday Sessions.

Godwin will perfrom at Higher Ground with support from Colby Acuff.

Rather than smoothing over life’s rough edges, Morgan Wade leans directly into them. Gregory Alan Isakov

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now calling Colorado home, horticulturist/musician Gregory Alan Isakov has cast an impressive presence on the indie-rock and folk worlds with his six full-length studio albums: That Sea, The Gambler; This Empty Northern Hemisphere; The Weatherman; Gregory Alan Isakov with the Colorado Symphony; Evening Machines (nominated for a Grammy award for Best Folk Album), and Appaloosa Bones. Isakov tours internationally with his band, and has performed with several national symphony orchestras across the United States.

Isakov’s new record, Appaloosa Bones, was released via Dualtone/Suitcase Town Music. Of the album, MOJO states, “Prime Isakov: his velvet baritone glides over elegant and shimmering Wild West mirages.” The Associated Press proclaims, “He has that magical ability to convey both urgency and grandeur at the same time…Simple. Straightforward. Utterly evocative.” And No Depression declares, “this is Isakov’s genius. He turns a short poem into a magnificent piece of music that can captivate for hours.”

When he is not on the road, he runs Starling Farm (a small farm in Boulder County), which provides produce to CSA members, restaurants, and Community Food Share (a local food bank).

Maintaining milk quality is a critical challenge as more dairy farms adopt automated milking systems. Dr. John Penry will examine the factors that influence milk quality in automated systems and share practical strategies for monitoring and improving outcomes. Topics will include udder health management, milking system hygiene, troubleshooting common quality issues, and best practices for farms transitioning to or operating automated milking.

The mission of the Tri-State Dairy Team is to unite Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont in advancing dairy management through collaborative educational programs, addressing shared industry challenges, and fostering innovation across northern New England.

Starting in January 2025, join the team of Dairy Extension Professionals from UMaine, UNH, and UVM and guests for live monthly webinars held on the last Wednesday of each month from 11:30am-12:30pm. Sessions will focus on current dairy research and programs happening in the tri-state region, including interviews, presentations and roundtable discussions. Tune in live to stay up-to-date and join the conversation. All sessions will be recorded and posted to the UVM Extension Northwest Crops and Soils YouTube channel.

In 2026, the theme is Advancing Dairy Systems Through Technology.

In July and August, webinars will focus on automation in the barn and the technologies transforming how dairy farmers manage daily operations.

Brown Horse return with their third album Total Dive. Their strongest and most grounded work to date, it showcases a new level of skill and assurance in the Norwich, UK band’s thoughtful lyricism and musicality. Leaning away from the playfulness and eclecticism of their previous works, Total Dive sees Brown Horse step forward into the darkness with a cautious optimism. With songs from each of the four members (Patrick Turner, Nyle Holihan, Emma Tovell and Rowan Braham) the writing charts a world of small revelations and painful changes. As they move confidently between searing noise and delicate reflection, they take time to note the beauty and agony of the mundane; the death rattle of a vending machine, headlights flashing in the eyes of a road-killed fox, the heather-pink of a winter sky. The new album is the clearest expression yet of Brown Horse’s unique sound – somewhere between the stark country rock of Uncle Tupelo, the raw intimacy of early Cat Power, and the haunted landscapes of Magnolia Electric Co., while embracing the self-possessed noisiness of alt rock trailblazers like Built to Spill and The Breeders. Bolstered by the playing of Norwich drummer, Ben Rodwell, and the vocal harmonies of Leeds-based musician, Neve Cariad, Total Dive is the sound of a band coming fully into their own. These are songs inhabited by wide Norfolk skies, thousands of shared miles on the road, the noise of heartbreak and humour, and the echoing silence of long hours spent in strange in-between places.

Unapologetically energetic, uplifting and with a live show that has been described as a “celebration of life”, Bermuda Search Party (FKA The Q-Tip Bandits) have emerged as a vibrant act that continues to touch audience’s hearts while getting them up on their feet.

After meeting in college and cutting their teeth in the Boston DIY music scene, the band recorded and released their self-produced debut LP, Melancholy Flowers, in 2022. Dynamic yet intimate, Melancholy Flowers features the vocal stylings and songwriting of both guitarist Leo Son and bassist Claire Davis, and smooth and soaring trumpet and trombone from Maclin Tucker and Hoyt Parquet.

Since then, the band has played hundreds of stages across the country, making their way from coast to coast and hitting festivals along the way including Boston Calling, Levitate Music Festival, SXSW, and Treefort Music Festival, before returning to the studio in September 2023 with producer Eric Palmquist (half•alive, Tate McRae, Bad Suns, Hunny) to record their sophomore album Fools On Parade, released in April 2025 via Nettwerk Music Group.

The band toured in support of the record throughout 2025, culminating in four Boston Music Awards nominations, for Live and Pop Act of the Year, Video of the Year for “Olivia,” and Album of the Year.

Victoryland is the Brooklyn-based project of musician Julian McCamman. His label-debut, My Heart Is A Room With No Cameras In It, out January 23, 2026 via Good English, is a triumphant, despondent, and ultimately fun experimental pop-rock album. Victoryland started in Philly 2023 with the release of tape, Sprain, which echoed more of what the Philly scene was dishing out: lo-fi, tape-recorded rock with a capital R. It was the collaborative efforts of producer Dan Howard that brought the new vision and sound into full focus.Dan and Julian previously worked on Julian’s now-defunct Texas-to-Philly based band Blood’s last LP, a collaborative effort between six bandmates. That experience pushed Julian toward a more personal process of recording, starting with home demos and then bringing them to Dan to shape into songs.

My Heart wrangles with heavy subject matter (love, disconnection, sexual frustration, emptiness etc.), but the terminal statement of the record is about the cleansing nature of pop music. That, if a song can force you to “bliss out” over a hook or a loop, or even make you dance, it can be the spoonful of sugar to swallow the hard pill with; this is what Victoryland strives to do: package the most exhausting realities of life, love, and the search for connection in a world starved of it, into a fun 2-5 minutes, and for the runtime of Victoryland’s first major statement, you might even feel like you’re not alone.

Wax and Hoppa had crossed paths musically before, but everything changed when Hoppa joined as Wax’s tour DJ in 2024. On the road together, the two quickly discovered a deep creative chemistry and a shared obsession with making music as often as possible.

Hoppa never travels without his portable studio, and that habit turned the tour into a rolling recording session. Songs took shape in hotel rooms, green rooms, and the back of moving vans on long stretches across the US and Canada. “People call it ‘work ethic,'” says Wax, “but when your work is fueled by fun and passion, it is very easy to clock in.”

The result is Highway Hotel — a road-born album that finds the perfect middle ground between Hoppa’s raw hip hop instincts and Wax’s melodic range and eclectic lyricism. Hoppa credits the casual environments for keeping things honest: “You are way less likely to overthink… you just do what feels right in the moment and roll with it.”

In these weekly talks, hosted by the Gund Institute for Environment, scholars and leaders exchange ("xChange") new research and solutions for people and planet.

This week, Dr. Jeffrey Hoelle explores the surprising connection between the grooming of hair and the management of land. Moving from the deforestation sites and cattle pastures of the Amazon frontier to urban backyards and barbershops of Brazil and the U.S., Hoelle reveals an overlooked aesthetic of control imprinted on both plants and hair. This system of thought creates chains of association where meticulous external appearance is often mistaken for internal human virtue and discipline. Hoelle argues that daily habits are not just about style; they are part of a domineering ideology contributing to environmental destruction and social inequality. Through a focus on the cultivation of plants and hair, we can begin to question our need for control and search for more balanced, sustainable relations with the hair that grows on us and the plants that grow around us. This talk is based on Hoelle's new book, "Cultivated: Plants, Hair, and the Aesthetic of Control", and draws on extensive anthropological research in the Brazilian Amazon.

About the speaker: Jeffrey's research explores the social, cultural, and political-economic dimensions of environmental transformation and deforestation in frontier Amazonia. His book, "Rainforest Cowboys: The Rise of Ranching and Cattle Culture in Western Amazonia", won the 2016 Book Prize from the Brazil Section the Latin American Studies Association. His new book, "Cultivated: Plants, Hair and the Aesthetic of Control" (Yale University Press), analyzes an "ideology of control" linking frontier land cultivation to personal grooming practices. Along with Brazilian colleague Valerio Gomes, he led the inaugural Fulbright Amazonia Initiative (2022-2024). Now, along with students, he runs the IV Ethnobotany Project, a local project that aims to connect the University of California Santa Barbara community with the environment.

LOVE HATE MUSIC BOX followed the band’s breakout full-length debut for Elektra, HOW TO: FRIEND, LOVE, FREEFALL, which arrived in April 2018. Also produced by Jay Joyce, the album featured RIAA-certified Platinum single “It’s Called: Freefall,” earned widespread praise from Billboard, TIME, Vice, and NPR, and saw the band make several national television appearances, including performances on “CBS Saturday Morning,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and PBS’s “Austin City Limits.”

The band is currently on the road for their Thanks For Coming Tour, which sees them headline amphitheatres across North America, including their fourth sold-out show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. This comes after last year’s LOVE HATE MUSIC BOX Tour, which marked their largest tour to date and included multiple arena headline dates, a stop at Radio City Music Hall in New York, and two nights at the iconic Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. In 2026, the band will kick off the bones Tour, which includes amphitheatre and arena dates across Australia, North America, and the United Kingdom.

Outdoor Family Weekend aims to inspire a better understanding of environmental conservation, safety, and fun in the outdoors among the general public.

Families will arrive and make camp on Friday. Classes are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday morning. Expert instructors begin each class with the basics, providing hands-on experience and encouraging participants to ask questions. Topics range from outdoor cooking, orienteering, and firecrafting to fishing, archery, canoeing, and basic firearm safety.

A beloved member of the University of Vermont community for more than four decades, Lyn served on the UVM faculty from 1969 until his retirement in 2011. He held a joint professorship in the Departments of Animal and Veterinary Sciences and Nutrition and Food Science, and he was also a member of the Biological Sciences and Graduate College faculties. Throughout his distinguished career, he earned national and international recognition for his contributions to animal nutrition research, agricultural development, and teaching excellence.

While Lyn's scholarly accomplishments were remarkable, he is perhaps best remembered for his profound dedication to his students. Over the course of his career, he taught more than 20,000 UVM students. His signature course, Fundamentals of Nutrition, introduced generations of learners to the science of nutrition and inspired countless careers in agriculture, health sciences, medicine, veterinary medicine, and related fields. A gifted educator and advisor, Lyn received many of UVM's highest honors for teaching, including the Kidder Award, the Kroepsch-Maurice Award, and the Carrigan Award. He was designated as the UVM Biological Sciences Scholar in 1988, and as UVM’s Outstanding Teacher by the Faculty Senate in 1999. He was also awarded the Robert O. Sinclair Cup for Career Achievement.

He was also recognized regionally as Vermont's Carnegie Professor of the Year in 2002. On the national stage, he received the competitive NASULGC/USDA Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1997, and the National Association of College Teachers of Agriculture named him a National Teacher Fellow in 2000.

Lyn's work also reached across the globe. From his service with the Rockefeller Foundation in Colombia during the Green Revolution to his collaborations throughout Latin America, Africa, and beyond, he combined scientific excellence with a deep commitment to improving lives through agriculture and nutrition. Colleagues and students alike remember his curiosity, generosity, passion for discovery, and his unwavering belief that teaching was among the most important and rewarding callings.

Even after retirement, Lyn remained deeply connected to UVM and to CALS, as well as to the many students, colleagues, and friends whose lives he touched. His legacy lives on through the thousands of alumni he inspired, the research he advanced, and the enduring spirit of inquiry and service he embodied.

Our thoughts are with Lyn's daughters, Leslie and Audre, his family, friends, former students, and colleagues.

In accordance with Lyn's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. His family invites friends, colleagues, and members of the UVM community to a Celebration of Life on September 13, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM in the Livak Ballroom at the Davis Center.

In addition to his stand-up specials, he has released 8 comedy albums. Throughout his career he has made multiple appearances on late night talk shows, and has appeared in several tv shows and films, including Martin Scorsese’s, The Irishman. A longtime fan of mixed martial arts, Jim is also the co-host of the official podcast of the UFC, “UFC Unfiltered with Jim Norton & Matt Serra”. He lives in New York City.

Following a successful run of critically acclaimed albums with the Marcus King Band, Greenville, South Carolina native Marcus King made his solo debut with the GRAMMY® nominated El Dorado in 2020, followed by Young Blood (2022) and Mood Swings (2024).
King is now reuniting with his longtime live band for the first time since 2018’s Carolina Confessions on the forthcoming Darling Blue, recorded at the iconic Capricorn Studios alongside GRAMMY®-winning producer and engineer Eddie Spear. The album features Noah Cyrus, Billy Strings, Kaitlin Butts, and more, with co-writes from Midland and Lainey Wilson among other notable names. Many of the songs across the album pay homage to King’s South Carolina roots and deep appreciation for his home state. Darling Blue, released on September 26 via American Records/Republic Records, marks a full-circle moment in King’s career. He’ll be touring internationally throughout the year, hitting the road with Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, and Eric Church in the U.S.

Sweden-based, Australian-born Hazlett returns to the road following the success of his latest full-length album, “last night you said you missed me”. Hazlett divulges: “When I started this whole thing I wanted anyone who starts to listen to feel like they’re part of this whole thing with me—growing and finding ourselves along the way.” Over the past several years, Hazlett and his unique brand of Indie Folk have quietly built a devoted following through his heartfelt songwriting and captivating live performances. Whether it’s an intimate clubs, historic theatre, or on festival stages around the world, his ability to create genuine connection with audiences continues to set him apart. From lush acoustic textures to stripped-back ballads, anchored by songs like “doing my best”, “Blame The Moon” and “queen of the season, each piece unfolds like a page from a well-worn journal, exploring themes of self-preservation, distance, yearning, and quiet hope. For the restless hearts, the gentle souls, and the dreamers, the live show and albums it gravitates around are both a confession and a cathartic hug. It reminds us that home is not always a place. Sometimes, it’s a song that stays a while.

In these weekly talks, hosted by the Gund Institute for Environment, scholars and leaders exchange ("xChange") new research and solutions for people and planet.

This week, pesticide use in agricultural landscapes creates environmental contamination that is heterogenous in space and time. Many organisms are exposed to multiple contamination sources when visiting patches that vary in the amount, timing and toxicity of pesticides used. Yet, environmental risk assessments typically fail to consider this heterogeneity, in part because of the complexities of estimating exposure to different pesticides at organism-relevant scales. This talk presents pesticides in agriculture as a socio-ecological system with three domains: pesticide use, exposure, and effect. Leveraging results from field experiments, biomonitoring networks, and modelling it offers next steps towards building standardized methods for landscape-level pesticide risk assessment.

About the speaker: Charlie's scholarship occurs at the intersection of global change biology, landscape ecology, and human well-being. A core theme is understanding the complex links between biodiversity and the ecosystem services that nature provides. He examines these relationships across various scales, from local farms to global food systems, considering the spatial dynamics and social equity dimensions of ecosystem service provision. Often his research focuses on plants and pollinators, given their central roles in natural and managed landscapes. He is also deeply concerned with the impacts of anthropogenic stressors on pollinator health and agricultural landscapes. His current research explores the effects of pesticide use and climate change on bee populations across different landscape contexts, aiming to understand and mitigate these negative impacts.

Weybridge, Vermont in February 1807 is small, cold, lonely, and beautiful. As an unwed woman with few prospects, Sylvia Drake resides with and cares for her sister’s rambunctious family. But today the house is abuzz awaiting a guest—Charity Bryant. So opens Charity and Sylvia by Tillie Walden, the award-winning, Vermont-based cartoonist and author of Spinning and On a Sunbeam.

Created by Walden from archival materials at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History in Middlebury, and other primary and secondary sources, Charity and Sylvia is a groundbreaking biography that is also the story of 19th century America.

Join us in John Dewey Lounge, Old Mill 325 for this special presentation from Tillie Walden, in conversation with Coco Moseley, Executive Director of the Sheldon Museum, about the creation of this book. The talk is free and open to all – students, faculty, staff, and the general public!

After the program, join the world premiere of Composer Clarice Assad’s work, Summerland, also based on the story of Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake. Old Crow Medicine Show

“If this is any indication of what Old Crow Medicine Show still has in store so many recordings in its career, we should count ourselves lucky.” – NPR Music

Old Crow Medicine Show got their start busking on street corners in 1998, from New York state and up through Canada, winning audiences along the way with their boundless energy and spirit. They eventually found themselves in Boone, North Carolina where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He invited the band to play at his festival, MerleFest, and the rest is history. It’s been over twenty years since these humble beginnings. The band has gone on to receive the honor of being inducted as members of the Grand Ole Opry and have won two Grammy Awards: “Best Folk Album” for Remedy (2014) and “Best Long Form Music Video” for Big Easy Express (2013). Additionally, their classic single, “Wagon Wheel”, received the RIAA’s Double-Platinum certification in 2019 for selling over 2,000,000 copies while the band’s debut album O.C.M.S. has been certified Gold (500,000 copies). The band’s latest Grammy nominated album ‘Jubilee’ (Aug 2023) released via ATO Records.

Palmyra

Established in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Palmyra captures the collective spirit of three Virginia natives: Teddy Chipouras, Mānoa Bell, and Sasha Landon.

Palmyra straddles at least two musical worlds. They are, on one hand, a band from the South that plays traditional instruments and indeed once lived in the old-time locus of Floyd, Virginia. Comparisons to and a kinship with The Avett Brothers and even Old Crow Medicine Show are inevitable. On the other hand, Palmyra writes about grief, gender dysphoria and identity, and coming of age in songs that flirt with soul, post-rock, and even emo; the South, too, is the place of My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, Cat Power, and now, Palmyra.

The band’s first full length LP, Restless, is out now on Oh Boy Records. Framed by moments of struggle, solidarity, and hard-won growth, Restless is an unqualified ringer for anyone who loves the space where the roar of indie rock collides with raw folk.

From Reykjavík to the global stage, Of Monsters and Men (OMAM) first captured the world’s attention with their 2011 debut My Head Is an Animal, transforming from Icelandic indie favorites into a band known and loved worldwide. Breakout single “Little Talks” became a generational anthem with over a billion Spotify streams and led to a 2013 Saturday Night Live debut. Their follow-up, Beneath the Skin (2015), debuted Top 3 on the Billboard 200 and included a surprise cameo on HBO’s Game of Thrones. Over the past 15 years, OMAMhave continuously explored, evolved, and built a world of music defined by growth and imagination—from the cinematic expansiveness of Beneath the Skin to the dreamlike textures of Fever Dream (2019).

Along the way, OMAM’s cinematic sound has been featured in The Hunger Games, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and more, while commanding festival sets at Coachella, Glastonbury, and Lollapalooza cemented their reputation as one of the most compelling live acts of their era. Jensen McRae could’ve been down for the count.

“The most profound choices of my life,” she says, “have often felt like things I did before I was ready to do, and I had to grow into them.” McRae’s songs have a way of giving shape to these leaps, cliff jumps and trust falls, and on her new album, I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!, Jensen McRae goes further than ever, evolving from a promising young artist to a fully grown songwriter and star. “It’s about realizing what you can’t outrun, and what follows when you have withstood what you thought might crush you,” she explains. “There are things that can happen to us—unthinkable, untenable things—that threaten our safety in our own bodies. They happen, and you feel like the only option is escape. In truth, the only way out is in—back into the place you have always lived.” The home – with Jensen front-and-center, possibly leaving, possibly arriving – adorns the artwork for I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!”. “You can leave the city, you can leave the lover,” McRae continues, “but you can never leave yourself.”

From the very beginning, fans have fallen in love with Jensen McRae for the sharp, evocative and clear-eyed songwriting. An avid journaler, McRae has been breathlessly documenting her existence since she was 18. Her first album, Are You Happy Now?, was a mission statement for the artist who grew up an automatic outsider: a Black Jewish girl from Los Angeles, hellbent on making folk music in spite of the world’s attempts to box her into other, more stereotypically Black genres. McRae looked to her songwriting heroes (Alicia Keys, Carole King, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder) to build a sonic world all her own. As her audience grew and with myriad doors began unlocking, it “became the record of my coming-of-age. But it was a quiet coming-of-age, one that mostly took place inside my own head.”

I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! takes place against the backdrop of romantic turbulence and McRae’s rapidly growing audience. “I had never been in love before,” McRae said, “not really. And then I had two life-altering relationships back to back in my early twenties. This album is primarily an exploration about how love and intimacy knock the wind out of you, can take your legs out from under you.” She has also had multiple viral moments; the most recent was in 2023, when McRae posted a solo verse and chorus online, little more than a piece of a demo, and it took off. Covers, duets, and an avalanche of new fans followed (including the likes of Justin Bieber, Stormzy, and Dan Nigro to name a few); the song was the beginning of “Massachusetts” , which would become her first Dead Oceans release.

I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! also reaffirms McRae’s defiance of expectations, as she deepens her singer-songwriter bona fides and claims space for young Black women in the genre. “I do still feel like I’m pushing a boulder up a hill,” she says. “I know that in spite of my success and hard work, I still do hit walls that aren’t there for other people, and that it’s because I’m working in a space that doesn’t already allow for people who look like me. It’s connected to why I make music,” she continues, “to be seen and to help others feel seen. But I remain somewhat misunderstood.”

McRae’s voice expertly embodies both the heartbreak of being left and of doing the leaving. On top of her excellent songwriting, McRae simply has an exceptional, acrobatic voice. Wispy and textured at times, clear and bright at others, McRae’s singing is surprising and multidimensional in much the same way as her lyrics. When the country-adjacent stealth single “Savannah” hits its crescendo, for example, it’s clear McRae is an artist with her own singular power, as piano layers with guitar and McRae delivers a series of scathing indictments with grit and conviction: “You swore you’d raise our kids to end up just like you / well you’re a false prophet / and that’s a goddamn promise.” “Let Me Be Wrong” is a buoyant ode to rejecting perfectionism. Built on a simple melody and acoustic guitar, it grows step over step; guitars layer, drums pick up the pace, and when McRae growls “fuck those girls got everything” it’s a punch of both power and vulnerability, begging to be shouted in unison with the biggest possible crowd.

The comparatively mellow but completely wrenching “Daffodils” explores the softer side of McRae’s singing, while lines like “he cleaned my clock / he bought me daffodils” bring the album’s juxtapositions into devastating focus. It is, by McRae’s own admission, “one of the most emotionally brutal lines on the album.” In fact “Daffodils” and “Tuesday” dive into the album’s heaviest themes –specifically, substance abuse and assault–and how slowly those particular dangers sink in when they’re brewing in an intimate partner. “Mother Wound” explores how an emotionally unavailable person can warp your ideas about love, as McRae sings “loving you lowered my expectations” over a steady, deliberate march of drums and piano.

Amidst all this I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! finds ways to let the light in. Album opener “The Rearranger” shimmers with a nostalgic gleam, even as it suggests trouble in paradise. “Novelty” is “a situationship anthem,” in McRae’s words, an infectious testament to the enduring allure of the one that got away. And even before the viral closer, “Massachusetts,” the penultimate “Praying For Your Downfall” oozes snark and charm, cutting down a lover who’s no longer worth the ill will she once wished for him. It also marks McRae’s transformation into self-assuredness, looking back at broken-heartedness but from a new, more sure-footed and powerful vantage point. McRae ventured to North Carolina to record I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! with Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Suki Waterhouse, Bon Iver), also enlisting the help of Hippocampus’s Nathan Stocker on guitar, Bon Iver’s Matthew McCaughan on drums, and her younger brother, Holden McRae, on keys. “It felt like summer camp. None of us wanted to leave,” McRae said. “It was such a joyous ten days of pure creative expression.” In the process, I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! found its footing–a vibrating, urgent collection of songs moored by razor-sharp lyrical specificity and timeless pop melodies.

The unusual title of her second album? Taken from a line in McRae’s favorite film, Back to the Future. A key protagonist survives a hail of bullets, and the image resonated with McRae. “I really connected with the idea that I could’ve easily collapsed beneath the weight of what happened to me, but I didn’t. I didn’t even know it,” McRae says, “but I was bulletproof the whole time.”

Scott George is a biologist in the Watersheds Research Section of the USGS New York Water Science Center in Troy, NY. He completed a master’s degree at the State University at Albany (SUNY) in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology on the impact of severe flooding on lotic biota. Scott’s current research is aimed at better understanding riverine fish, benthic macroinvertebrate, and periphyton communities and the disturbances that impact them. Specific ongoing projects include monitoring the expansion of Round Goby towards the Hudson River using environmental DNA and other methods, studying the recovery of fish assemblages in acid-impacted Catskill Mountain streams, and evaluating the toxicity of sediments to benthic macroinvertebrates in Great Lakes Areas of Concern.

Cheekface is an indie rock trio, more precisely a talk-singing band, from Los Angeles.

The story starts in 2017. Things were getting pretty crappy on Earth. Indie rock lifers Greg and Mandy got together to write out the anxiety, despair and the bleak humor of it all. They sent the demos to Echo and, voila, a band.

The band chased their 2019 debut LP “Therapy Island” with 2021’s “Emphatically No,” which bowed as Bandcamp’s top-selling alternative album. Their 3rd LP “Too Much to Ask” in 2022 was a watershed moment: it shot to #2 on the non-commercial radio chart, and The Needle Drop proclaimed it one of the year’s best albums. Cheekface’s 4th album “It’s Sorted” came out January 22, 2024. Touring to support “It’s Sorted,” the band sold out shows across the US, Canada and the UK.

This workshop will introduce a range of gamification approaches, from low-tech activities to more structured digital and AI-supported strategies, and explore how instructors can adjust scale, duration, and complexity to fit their courses.

This 60-minute in-person session gives participants hands-on practice with activities and examples, with time to think about applying them in their own courses.

We also have a 30-minute remote session, which provides an overview with examples and brief discussion of how to use these strategies in different classroom contexts. You may attend either session; both cover the same core ideas at different levels of depth.

A native of Los Angeles, Violet Grohl has been immersed in music from her earliest days. Whether singing along to Beatles vinyl alone in her bedroom, writing her first song at the age of 12 or gracing real world stages big and small, Violet has always been focused on increasing her musical palette and vocabulary. She’s a true student of the art form, whose notebooks are stuEed with poetry and influences that bend genres. In 2024, Violet met producer Justin Raisen (Charli xcx, Kim Gordon) and went on an unexpected (and unexpectedly prolific) ride to collaborate on the music featured on her debut album, “Be Sweet To Me,” out globally on May 29th.

Just gorgeous music that is original, pure, and new. Ballaké and Piers create songs that blend West African rhythms and melodies with the traditional folk music of the British Isles. Malian master kora player Ballaké Sissoko was last on our stage with the French cellist Vincent Ségal for a sold-out concert in 2017. This consummate musical collaborator is now touring with the British singer/guitarist (and visual artist) Piers Faccini, and the songs they are creating together are an exquisite example of two disparate worlds coming together in a way that is moving and profound.

Hana Stretton is a British/Australian composer, singer and producer known for her remarkably warm production style and uniquely spacious songform. In 2023, her debut album, Soon, earned a beloved status among discerning listeners around the globe. This stunning work caught the ear of one Phil Elverum, who lovingly reissued Soon through his own label in 2024, furthering the album’s reach and deepening its reputation. In the press, Elverum said: “I hear an artist who has entered completely into the stream where creation originates […] Hana Stretton has truly recorded the deep flourishing sound of a quiet listening mind in full blossom.” A fitting testament to a young artist rooted in the stillness of nature.

From the dusty Australian bushland on Soon, Stretton transports the listener to the Pacific Ocean on her new album, tiarn (set to be released summer 2026). Shifting gradually like a shoreline, her new compositions reveal welcomed hints of classical and electronic flourishes. tiarn will be released independently with vinyl editions through PW Elverum & Sun (North America), brierfield flood press (Australia) and Lima Limo (Europe/UK).

Helena Deland is a Montreal-based musician interested in how songs can hold what eludes everyday language. Her music draws on reading and walking around. She released her first album, Someone New, in 2020 on Luminelle Recordings. It was followed by the release of Hildegard, a collaborative album with fellow Montreal musician Ouri on section1. “Spring Bug” is her second single released with Montreal label and longtime collaborators Chivi Chivi, following 2022’s “Swimmer”.

Helena is also announcing her first North American headline tour. She has extensively toured North America and Europe opening for the likes of Weyes Blood, Andy Shauf, Connan Mockasin, Soccer Mommy and Iggy Pop.

The 2026 Samuel Hand Lecture will feature a talk from former Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Roger Allbee drawing on the research for his 2025 book, Turning the Soil: 250 Years of Vermont Agriculture. Hearty refreshments to follow.

Turning the Soil: 250 Years of Vermont Agriculture by Roger Allbee traces Vermont’s farming history from before statehood to the present, emphasizing that the only constant has been change. Allbee grew up on his family’s hillside dairy farm in the Vermont town his ancestors settled, where they have farmed continuously since 1794; though not a farmer by trade, that deep roots and his later policy roles (Vermont Secretary of Agriculture; USDA Farm Service Agency executive director) shape the book’s perspective.

The book moves through key turning points—early mixed farming, the 19th‑century sheep boom and bust, the rise of dairy and maple, and the impact of westward expansion, technology, policy, and markets—to show how farmers repeatedly reinvented their enterprises. Blending stories of individual farmers and leaders with broader historical forces, it argues that these cycles of adaptation are Vermont’s agricultural heritage and a roadmap for the future.

On the massively anticipated Vega—the first album in ten years from vocalist Stephen Christian, guitarists Joseph Milligan and Christian McAlhaney, bassist Deon Rexroat, and drummer Nathan Young—the Florida-bred band deliver a body of work forged with an explosive new energy, thanks in part to the addition of singer Matty Mullins (the Memphis May Fire frontman who’s stepped in as live vocalist for Anberlin, following Christian’s announcement that he’ll no longer tour full-time). The latest triumph in an extraordinary career that’s included selling over 1.5 million albums in the U.S. alone and turning out hits like the No. 1 Alternative Radio smash “Feel Good Drag,” Vega reveals a band whose creative passion and one-of-a-kind vision have only grown stronger over time.

Arriving on the heels of two back-to-back EPs—2022’s Silverline and 2023’s Convinced—Vega emerged from a period of unbridled creativity for Anberlin, who parted ways soon after 2014’s Lowborn and reunited for a series of lockdown-era livestreams. In bringing their new album to life, the band embraced a deliberately free-flowing and DIY approach, building up songs in McAlhaney’s garage before self-producing the LP at Tampa’s Feral Sound Studios. “In the past we’d sometimes limit our sound to some preconceived idea of what Anberlin is supposed to be,” says McAlhaney. “This time the mantra was, ‘If it feels good, let’s try it.’ Because at the end of the day, Anberlin is whatever we say it is.” As a result, Vega encompasses everything from the shout-along-ready pop perfection of “Walk Alone” to the brutally heavy intensity of “Seven” (a shapeshifting and strangely enthralling epic featuring a savage vocal performance from Mullins). “I think after spending time apart we came back with a new perspective, where we were all just excited to work together and create the best songs we can,” says Young. “No one was precious about their ideas; it was all about making something that feels new and risky and like nothing we’ve ever done before.”

As they get set to embark on the 20 Years of Tears amphitheater tour with Thursday, Hawthorne Heights, and Saosin—a 56-date run that marks their most extensive tour in a decade—Anberlin look forward to the pure thrill of performing their new material for their longtime legion of fans. “We’ve had so many people tell us things like, ‘Your songs got me through a really difficult time in my life,’ or ‘You guys are what made me pick up a guitar and start my own band,’” says Rexroat. “It’s an incredible feeling to know that we’ve impacted other people on that level—the amount of love we’ve felt is undeniable, and it’s one of the main reasons we’ve kept going for as long we have.”

In these weekly talks, hosted by the Gund Institute for Environment, scholars and leaders exchange ("xChange") new research and solutions for people and planet.

This week, we are running out of time to reduce CO2 enough to prevent at least a 2C (and likely more) global temperature change. Reducing emissions is the first priority. However, the Assessment Report 6 of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that we cannot reach net zero without also removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. For the past several years, I have been working in government, NGOs and the National Academies to think deeply about whether using the ocean to sequester CO2 is necessary and possible to do without causing harm to marine ecosystems and fisheries. More recently, I have been focusing on the international and national governance regimes needed to manage field testing and deployments. Jewett give an overview of mCDR, the different approaches and how it works, and then discuss the status of governance and proposals for new approaches.

About the speaker: Dr. Libby Jewett spent the past nearly 20 years working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Through her leadership of the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program, she fostered research on how anthropogenic carbon dioxide affects the ocean and marine life. She worked at the nexus of science andnational and international policy. She served as a lead author on the last three US National Climate Assessments and the last international assessment done under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. She also led an international effort through the International Council on the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) to gather experts to assess the risks of marine Carbon Dioxide Removal on fisheries, aquaculture and indigenous communities and helped develop a research agenda assessing impacts of offshore wind on marine ecosystems and fisheries.

Matthew Jaremski will be presening his paper, "Monetary Policiy Shocks and Financial Stability: Evidence from the Great Depression." He is the F. Ross Peterson Professor of Economic History at Utah State University and a Faculty Research Fellow of the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research focuses on understanding the financial dynamics that underlie major macroeconomic events by examining the historical U.S. financial system.

He is particularly interested in the pre-World War II period, when the majority of banks were regulated by state legislatures, printed their own money, were highly susceptible to bank runs, and had limited ability to receive emergency liquidity in times of distress. This historical period provides a unique laboratory for studying the causes and consequences of financial instability.

His research has been published in leading academic journals including the Journal of Finance and Journal of Financial Economics.

Established in 2013 to honor Mark J. Zwynenburg '81, the Mark J. Zwynenburg Professorship supports the Department of Economics in recruiting and retaining exceptionalyy qualified faculty engaged in teaching and research investigating financial history issues.

This inaugural lecture series advances the professorship's mission by bringing leading financial history scholars to our campus, enriching our acadmeic community and demonstrating the excellence in scholarship and intellectual engagement that define the professorship.

Her work centers on the use of large genomics data sets to address evolutionary, environmental, and biomedical questions. Dr. Dragon is committed to leveraging genomics data to address many issues impacting our planet and lives. She has a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from UVM, where she studied the evolution of an arctic-subarctic section of marsh sedges with Dr. David Barrington.

Less than a decade into her career, Katie Pruitt has cemented her status as an essential artist who helps us make sense of modern life and uncover meaningful ways of moving through it. Since the arrival of her critically celebrated full-debut Expectations (a 2020 LP that earned her an Emerging Artist of the Year nomination from the Americana Music Association), the Georgia-bred singer/songwriter/guitarist has assembled an acclaimed body of work exploring questions both existential and intimate (e.g., identity, self-acceptance, the quiet courage of living truthfully). On her new album Fools for the Fleeting, the Nashville based musician reckons with the impermanence inherent to being human, shifting between poetic observation and confessional storytelling as she confronts such complex matters as ecological anxiety, love’s intrinsic fragility, and the profound isolation normalized by our increasingly digitized existence.

Her third full-length and follow-up to 2024’s Mantras, Fools for the Fleeting emerged from Pruitt’s vision of creating an album that feels “rooted to the earth”—a concept closely tied to the LP’s underlying theme of nature as a mirror for our inner lives. A prime showcase for her warm and soulful voice, the 10-song set centers on a powerful yet intentional form of Americana/indie-rock, steeped in acoustic instrumentation and the beautifully imperfect friction of live performance, courtesy of musicians like Juan Solorzano (a guitarist known for his work with Ruston Kelly and Parker Millsap) and Aksel Coe (a drummer who’s played with Ella Langley and Sierra Ferrell). As Pruitt’s most outward-reaching and philosophically rich work to date, the result is a luminous meditation on transience and grief, connection as survival, and the transformative power of presence and surrender.

In higher education, students are often asked to synthesize large amounts of information under tight deadlines. Traditional text-based approaches tend to focus on memorization and linear note-taking, but research shows that students learn more when they engage in active, creative, and reflective practices. Visual mapping, such as concept maps, mind maps, and other diagrammatic techniques, offers a playful, curiosity-driven way for students to organize ideas, see connections, and interact with course material.

This workshop presents strategies for using visual mapping in a range of classroom settings. Participants will examine examples of how these techniques can support lectures, group work, discussions, and assessments. By representing information visually, students can reduce cognitive overload, spot patterns, and reflect on their understanding in a low-stakes, high-impact way.

60-minute in-person session provides an overview AND gives participants hands-on practice with activities and examples, with time to think about applying them in their own courses.

Bombargo is a Canadian based international touring band that drops a vibrant splash of soul over their distinctive ‘vintage-pop’ sound. Well known for bringing unrivaled energy to the stage with sing-along anthems, double-brother harmonies, and a powerful message that combined make for one of the most captivating live shows ever! Frontman Nathan Thoen’s passionate conviction and ‘Jagger-like’ dance moves even impressed billionaire and music industry icon Sir Richard Branson, quoting “I haven’t seen this type of energy since The Rolling Stones!” – and he would know, having personally signed The Rolling Stones to Virgin Records.

The band began with lead singer Nathan Thoen and guitarist Spencer Chilliak after the two spontaneously met and drove 16 hours to attend Sasquatch Music Festival where they became inspired to start a band. The duo wrote their debut single “Let It Grow” during their very first writing session and as part of Bombargo’s debut EP Back on Main which would go on to be included in “The Top 10 Best Saskatchewan Albums of 2015” by SaskMusic. This further inspired them to continue writing, touring, and release their first full-length album titled We Are Bombargo. The group has since evolved into a 5-piece touring band adding Nathan’s brother Anthony Thoen on guitar, additional brothers Matt and Sammy Folkersen on keys and bass respectively, and Niall Cubbon on drums.

Bombargo went on to receive massive acclaim when pop star icon Taylor Swift added their 2018 single “Mr. No Good” to her Spotify Playlist titled “Songs Taylor Loves” alongside mega artists including Ed Sheeran, Camilla Cabello, and Kendrick Lamar. Being the only unsigned band on this star-studded playlist saw Bombargo featured on CBC’s the Q, NME, Exclaim, Fashion, Noisey, People, and Billboard. This success was followed up by the release of their most successful single to date – “Oxygen” which pushed Bombargo into the Canadian Hot AC Top 40 Charts for the first time in the fall of 2019. The band also made its US touring debut in late 2019 with their 33 date “North American Dream Tour” which kicked off with Bombargo playing the sold-out Roughriders Labour Day Classic Half-Time Show to over 33,000 people. The band’s highly anticipated US debut at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, CA gained heavy press coverage including a raving article in Billboard Magazine.

Bombargo has opened for legendary acts including John Butler Trio, Alan Stone, RIPE, Joel Plaskett and most recently performed on the Okeechobee festival main stage in Florida with over 40,000 in attendance. They have surpassed 10 million streams on streaming services, received over 1million+ views on YouTube, and were nominated for the Saskatchewan Music Awards “Pop/Rock Artists of the Year” in both 2018 and 2019. In August of 2020 the band landed a ‘most excellent’ cameo in the hollywood blockbuster Bill & Ted 3: Face The Music. There’s no doubt Bombargo will continue spreading The Goodtime Guarantee™ long into the future.

If Briscoe’s debut album was a coming-of-age soundtrack set against the backdrop of the Texas Hill Country, then its follow-up, Heat of July, is the sound of a fully-formed duo chasing down a broader horizon.

Inspired by the cross-country tours that took the band across America, these new songs expand Briscoe’s folk-rock sound in all directions. There are bigger arrangements, sharper harmonies, and enough top-tier guest musicians to form their own supergroup. The result is a cinematic, widescreen version of American roots music, created by two lifelong friends who’ve learned to distill the thrill of the open road — and the challenges of growing up — into an ever-evolving soundtrack.

Hot asphalt. Spinning wheels. Mile markers. For Philip Lupton and Truett Heintzelman, those hallmarks of the American highway system have become the only constants in a period filled with change. Signed by ATO Records while still pursuing undergraduate degrees at UT Austin, the two Texas natives recorded Briscoe’s debut album, West Of It All, during their final months as college students. Once graduation arrived, they left town and hit the road, spending a dizzying year crisscrossing the country — particularly the southwest — in a van packed with gear and bandmates. Seated up front, Philip and Truett found themselves in awe of the

canyons, mountains, and mesas that unfolded just outside the windshield. New songs began to arrive during those long drives across the desert, dreamt into existence at 80 miles per hour, as eclectic and evocative as the landscape that inspired them.

“We learned how to write music from behind the wheel,” Philip says, thinking back to the show-filled schedule that helped transform Briscoe from Texas’ best-kept secret into national torchbearers of timeless Americana. “Coming up with melodies in our heads, without a guitar or piano nearby, was a necessity for us during those tours. We were on the road so much that we had to become more mobile with the creative process.”

“There are so many beautiful parts of America, but the southwest is something we really gravitate toward,” adds Truett. “There’s something about that area that makes us want to write songs. During the past year, though, it became the new norm to write songs on the go, drawing inspiration from wherever we were.”

The guys drew inspiration from home, too. Philip and Truett both married their longtime partners in the wake of West Of It All’s success — whose accolades included a Top 40 hit on the Triple A chart with “The Well,” as well as offers to tour alongside acts like Noah Kahan and Dave Matthews Band — and thoughts of family lingered as they traveled across North America, playing everywhere from Canada to Cancun. By the time Briscoe arrived in North Carolina to record Heat of July with Brad Cook — the Grammy-nominated producer behind albums by Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, as well as Briscoe’s debut — they’d written another batch of songs that celebrated not only the great outdoors, but also their flesh-and-blood roots as husbands and family men. Heat of July makes room for all of it, showcasing a pair of songwriters who’ve learned to grow without leaving their foundations behind.

On “Adeline” — a blast of roadhouse rock & roll, punctuated by harmonica, upright piano, and a lushly harmonized chorus — Truett serenades his wife while Houndmouth’s Matt Myers chimes in on electric guitar. Philip delivers snapshots of his own marriage with songs like “Mexican Eagles” and “Blue Eyes and Red Wine,” filling his lyrics with the rugged imagery of West Texas, singing in a voice that’s the folky foil to his bandmate’s croon. Those entwined voices have been Briscoe’s calling card for years, even since the two singers first crossed paths while attending the same summer camp at 14 years old. Here, their harmonies lead the charge on nearly every track. They come together on acoustic anthems like “Roughnecks,” written about Truett’s great-grandfather (who left Oklahoma to work in the Texas oil fields during the early 20th century) and laced with traditional bluegrass instrumentation. They do the same on “Arizona Shining,” inspired by one of the group’s many road trips through the desert; “Saving Grace,” with its anthemic chorus and love-story narrative; and the haunted, harrowing “Flashlights in the Canyon,” which tells the story of a border-bound woman hoping to escape to America.

“Flashlights in the Canyon is a story inspired by an experience I had along the Texas-Mexico border and the conversations I had with locals in the area afterward.” Philip says, adding, “Having seen firsthand the humanity on both sides of the border crisis, I was inspired to create a narrative that doesn’t advocate for any one agenda, but rather focuses on the real people who are living the conflict. I hope this song helps to shed light on the fact that there is gray area between what so many people believe is black and white”

Briscoe’s songwriting isn’t the only thing that’s grown since West Of It All’s release. Thanks in part to an expanded guest list that includes drummer Matthew McCaughan (Bon Iver), fiddle player Libby Rodenbough (Mipso), mandolinist Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse, formerly know as Mandolin Orange), multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook (Hiss Golden Messenger), and electric guitarist Matt Myers (Houndmouth), Heat of July sounds bigger and bolder than its predecessor. “Free,” with its country-funk groove and soulful stomp, marks new territory for the band, while the album’s title track — with its intro of syncopated banjo and booming percussion — nods to a group willing to electrify and enlarge its sound.

“I studied geology, so driving through Arizona is like me being a kid in a candy store,” says Philip. “We’ll always write songs inspired by that landscape, but we’ve learned how to tell more personal stories with our music, too. We’re talking about our wives, our relationships, and our family trees. We’re really wearing our hearts on our sleeves when we’re writing.”

“It felt like home to be back in the studio with Brad,” Truett adds. “He already understood our dynamic, so he felt comfortable pushing us as songwriters and lyricists. He helped us grow. And whenever we’d say, ‘It would be real nice to have a flatpicking guitar here’ or ‘Maybe this song needs a fiddle,’ Brad would say, ‘What about so-and-so from this band?’ He’d reach out to them, and before we knew it, we had this crazy roster of artists playing with us. It was like a big folk supergroup.”

There’s more touring up ahead, of course. More commitments that will take Briscoe away from the lives they’ve built in Texas. Heat of July may be the band’s next ticket out of town, but it’s also a love letter to the landscape that first inspired Truett and Philip to write songs. The road goes on forever… but for Briscoe, the road always leads back home, too.

“Growing up in the heat taught me to savor the cooler moments: those fifteen minutes of soft blue light just after the sun dips below the horizon,” Philip explains. “That feeling is something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. Memories like long drives to reach any city of significance, the smell of rain on hot asphalt, and the fleeting nature of a summer fling — these are the moments I wove into ‘Heat of July,’ which feels like a personal theme song. They’ve left a lasting impression, and no matter where life takes me, I’ll never leave behind the heat of July. You take it with you all year long, and you learn how to appreciate the cool when it does come.”

For Briscoe, there’s a lot to appreciate these days. As they fuel up the van for another year of heavy touring, they’re grateful for everything that’s brought them here, whittling their songwriting into sharp shape, turning them into touring veterans. The heat of July certainly doesn’t bother them. But when another season arrives, they’ll be ready.

This presentation offers a clinically practical framework for identifying hEDS using the 2017 hEDS Diagnostic Criteria, with emphasis on moving beyond isolated diagnostic tools like the Beighton score toward a more comprehensive evaluation of patient history and symptom presentation. Attendees will learn to identify key diagnostic patterns, including chronic pain, joint instability, dysautonomia, and immune-related symptoms.

Particular attention will be given to common comorbidities, including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, which frequently coexist in the “trifecta” of hEDS/POTS/MCAS. Understanding these overlapping conditions as part of a broader physiological network can reduce fragmentation of care and uncover the body systems involved: the connective tissue, the nervous system, and the immune system. With an understanding of how these systems present in hEDS/POTS/MCAS, attendees will learn simple and accessible treatment approaches to avoid referring out without providing attuned action steps for their patients.

Through case-based learning and literature review, this session will provide actionable screening strategies, highlight common diagnostic pitfalls, and review key considerations for differential diagnosis, including when to refer for genetic or specialty evaluation. The role of therapeutic alliance, patient validation, and longitudinal care will be emphasized as essential components of effective management.

By equipping clinicians with a foundation for accurate diagnosis and first steps for care plan direction, this presentation aims to support earlier recognition of hEDS, improve care coordination, and enhance outcomes for patients with complex, multi-system presentations.

As the semester moves towards its end, students and instructors alike may be feeling a mix of fatigue and anticipation. This period, between mid-semester routines and end-of-term closure, offers an opportunity to pause and reflect. Grounded in Sarah Rose Cavanagh’s work on emotion in learning, this workshop explores how engaging students’ emotions – through storytelling, mindfulness, Joy Cards, and other reflective activities – can strengthen presence in the classroom. Emotions stick with students, helping them make connections, step out of their comfort zones, and engage in meaningful ways. Storytelling can reach all kinds of learners and make revision and performance central to learning.

This workshop will introduce a range of strategies and tools from brief in-class activities to longer assignments and explore how instructors can adapt them for the end of the semester and carry these approaches forward into future courses.

Rodrigo Soares, is a postdoctoral associate in the UVM Plant and Soil Science Department. He earned his PhD in strategic communication and a masters in mass communication from the University of Central Florida (UCF). Soares has 15 years of experience as a leading practitioner in the communication field, and seven years of applied research in risk and crisis communication. His work has analyzed disease outbreaks and pandemics such as the Zika virus in Brazil and COVID19, through a message design perspective. He also tested the adequacy of crisis communication theories in explaining the failures of institutions facing repeated crises, expanding the understanding of post-crisis learning. His research provides both theoretical advancements and practical applications to the field of risk and crisis communication.

The First Amendment protects the free exercise of religion. The Fourteenth Amendment affords all persons equal protection under the law. What happens when those two rights collide, as happened in the Masterpiece Cake case? Must protections for religious liberties come at the expense of non-discrimination statutes?

This presentation considers the unlikely coalition between advocates for the LGBTQ community and members of the Church of Latter Day Saints. In 2015, these political enemies became practical allies, creating a law that required no one to compromise their deepest values. Jazz duo Dana & Alden have always had a wanderlust, something they credit to their maternal grandfather. Affectionately known as Papa, he was the kind of person others naturally gravitate towards. It was a photograph from one of his trips to Asia that inspired the Eugene, OR duo’s new album Papa’s Boat. In the image Papa is looking out across the horizon and stood next to his boat Sŵn y Môr (Welsh for “Sound of the Sea.”)

“I think so much of what Alden and I are doing comes from just watching him live his own unique life,” says Dana. Alden agrees. “His emboldened, passionate personality gave us permission to be our own selves, to be unconventional and draw outside of the box.”

Recorded with Malcolm Catto in London in March 2025, Papa’s Boat combines all their childhood love and global experience to create an ecstatic sound built on Dana’s saxophone and Alden’s drums. Recorded with the duo’s backing band, Ebba Dankel (vocals and keys), Andrew Mitchell (bass), Eli Torgersen (vocals and guitar) and Salim Charvet (sax and synths), Papa’s Boat is rooted in jazz but pulling influence from indie, pop, rap, bossa nova, and beyond. A hypnotic combination of sax and buzzing synths on “Lighthouse” sets the tone for an album that uses water as both a reflective surface and a body to get lost in. Elsewhere there are collaborations with Mei Semones, Melanie Charles, and legendary Brazilian songwriter Marcos Valle, a hero figure to the band who appears on “El Gaucho” and “Friendship Is A Boat.”

Throughout its runtime Papa’s Boat sails purposefully between memories of the past and visions of a brighter future. It doesn’t just commemorate their Papa as a beloved character, but shares him with the world.

In these weekly talks, hosted by the Gund Institute for Environment, scholars and leaders exchange ("xChange") new research and solutions for people and planet.

This week, in recent decades, the bicycle has been touted as a vehicle for a small planet, gaining a reputation as a “mobility fix” for congested cities to address the environmental externalities of motorized transportation, support the rise of green economies, and advance urban sustainability and well-being. As more cities have invested in infrastructure to support bicycle transportation, however, scholars and activists have drawn attention to corresponding patterns of support for uneven and consumption-oriented development, gentrification, and racialized disinvestment. In this talk, environmental anthropologist, bicycle researcher, and Gund Fellow Luis Vivanco explores these debates over the sustainability of the bicycle, and assesses a diverse array of alternative frameworks for imagining the relationship between people, bicycles, and the environment.

About the speaker: Luis Vivanco is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Vermont. Since finishing his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at Princeton University in the late-1990s, his scholarship and writings have focused on the culture and politics of community-level conservation in Costa Rica and Oaxaca, Mexico; multisited fieldwork on the transnational ecotourism certification movement; the cultural and technological history of wildlife films; and ethnographic research on social movements promoting the bicycle as a tool for urban transformation in Colombia, the U.S., and Denmark. Lately he’s been creating hand-drawn comics from his various research endeavors and leads the UVM Comics-Based Research Lab. His tenth book, which was just published in 2026 is Culture, Nature, and Environmental Sustainability: An Anthropological Introduction (John Wiley and Sons).

Carsie Blanton is a songwriter with hooks, chutzpah, and revolutionary optimism. A radical folk artist in the tradition of Woody Guthrie, her infectious melodies and lyrical wit keep listeners rapt while she conjures spirits of vaudeville, campfire singalongs, and punk rock. Blanton and her road-tested band deploy humor, camaraderie, and considerable musical muscle to enroll each audience in a rare vision of hope and solidarity.

In addition to writing and performing music, Carsie works as a political organizer and activist. In fall of 2025, she participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a direct action to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza by sailboat. In early October, after a month at sea, she was imprisoned in Israel for five days along with hundreds of her comrades.

Soon after, Blanton released The Little Flame, a song of solidarity covered widely on social media during her detention. The Little Flame features background vocals from Irish band Ye Vagabonds and Carsie’s Palestinian/New Zealander prison-mate Rana Hamida, and appears on her latest album, The Red Album Vol II.

After two decades spent on the road, Blanton has amassed a dedicated fan base and a small menagerie of viral hits, and regularly sells out mid-size venues across the U.S. and Europe. 2026 will find her touring heavily with her own band and in collaboration with Canadian folk-punk rabblerousers The Burning Hell, as well as continuing her organizing work with Artists Against Apartheid, Party for Socialism and Liberation and others.

Bio: Dr. Levine's research group focuses on developing and applying methods for simulating electronically excited molecules and materials, including those important for solar energy conversion and light-driven chemistry. This work encompasses the development of new theories and simulation methods, the efficient implementation of these methods on high-performance computer hardware, and the application of the resulting tools to solve real chemical problems of fundamental and technological interest. Current applications of interest include semiconductor nanomaterials for solar energy conversion and light emission, and ultrafast spectroscopy, strong field processes in molecules, and optical processes in metal clusters. We focus on understanding nonadiabatic effects in these systems—the exchange of energy between electronic and vibrational/reactive degrees of freedom.

In these weekly talks, hosted by the Gund Institute for Environment, scholars and leaders exchange ("xChange") new research and solutions for people and planet.

This week, many studies have shown that interacting with nature may have beneficial effects for one’s mental health. More specifically, interacting with nature may have dual benefits, both reducing stress and improving attentional control, defined as the ability to actively maintain task goals and avoid sources of interference, thereby representing a critical cornerstone of higher-order cognition. The present talk will briefly highlight ongoing, cutting-edge research in the interdisciplinary field of environment and cognition with respect to both methodological approaches and the core mental and neural processes most likely to benefit from interacting with nature including attention and emotion. These findings will be discussed in light of emerging, integrated perspectives on how human-environment interaction influences both arousal (emotion) and engagement (attention). About the speaker: Dr. Watson is an experimental cognitive psychologist with a longstanding interest in the control of attention - defined as maintaining task goals and minimizing distractions - as it relates to human behavior and its neural/psychophysiological correlates as observed in both more traditional laboratory contexts and in more applied settings. Dr. Watson’s research has increasingly begun to focus on what impact interacting with nature or urban environments may have on affect and attention. Consistent with this idea, Dr. Watson’s most recent empirical work suggests interacting with nature may calibrate the control of attention, thereby optimizing performance during certain cognitive tasks. Given his interdisciplinary research interests in environment and cognition, Dr. Watson is the lead guest editor of a Special Issue on nature’s influence on attention that will be published in 2027 at the Journal of Cognitive Psychology. Dr. Watson is also the Principal Investigator for the Society for Nature and Cognition, a newly formed, collaborative research group who meets in conjunction with the annual scientific meeting of the Psychonomic Society.

Dr. Scarborough is an Associate Professor in UVM’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on the application of microbiomes to protect the natural environment and public health. His currently focuses on the management of organic wastes with the goal of harnessing reactor microbiomes to convert renewable feedstocks to valuable products and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills with soil microbiomes. Dr. Scarborough earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he worked as part of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center.

As the semester moves towards its end, students and instructors alike may be feeling a mix of fatigue and anticipation. This period, between mid-semester routines and end-of-term closure, offers an opportunity to pause and reflect. Grounded in Sarah Rose Cavanagh’s work on emotion in learning, this workshop explores how engaging students’ emotions – through storytelling, mindfulness, Joy Cards, and other reflective activities – can strengthen presence in the classroom. Emotions stick with students, helping them make connections, step out of their comfort zones, and engage in meaningful ways. Storytelling can reach all kinds of learners and make revision and performance central to learning.

This in-person workshop will introduce a range of strategies and tools from brief in-class activities to longer assignments and explore how instructors can adapt them for the end of the semester and carry these approaches forward into future courses.

“It clicked for me one day, that the album was going to be about hornets,” explains Sputnik, the mononymous songwriter behind the noise-pop project Weatherday. “It just made sense to me.”

Hornet Disaster, Weatherday’s follow-up to their 2019 debut Come in, and spiritual successor to 2022’s collab release Weatherglow, is their most expansive work to date. In Weatherday’s initial bout of inspired writing and recording, they produced over 70 songs for the record, but not before they had a complete, overarching narrative that was coherently tied back to Sputnik’s previous work.

It’s a bustling record with disparate songs each vying for space like wasps in a swarm. It can inspire caution and chaos, but there’s wonder, purpose, and a certain familiarity there, too. Weatherday has extended the knotted, thrashing maximalism of Come in by doubling down with the uncompromised, no-stone-unturned nature of Hornet Disaster. Where Come in was the product of an artist searching for their voice, Hornet Disaster represents the joyful abandon that comes from having found it.

A musical lighthouse, shining a resilient light for everyone that has had to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, Tropidelic has arrived on the national stage. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, a city rich in character and music history, this six-piece performance powerhouse carves their own path with an independent mentality. Front man Roads, explores feelings more than sounds, seeing where the emotional travel can take him, while valuing being comfortable and honest.

There is a sense of seeing where the music can go on every track they release. As an everyman-band making music to overcome life’s obstacles, the “goals” that Tropidelic made when starting the band have all been surpassed. Roads says of the band’s future, “I’m nose to the grindstone. It’s going great and I am going to keep going.”

Recent highlight moments include a first pitch at a Cleveland Guardians game followed by a live performance for the entire stadium; an adopted highway in their hometown; producing two of their own music festivals (Sunny Days and Everwild Music Festival); tens of millions of streams of Tropidelic’s music; appearances at major US festivals such as Okeechobee, Beach Life, and Tortuga; tours with The Dirty Heads, Lupe Fiasco, and 311; and multiple performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Carbon Leaf’s fifteenth studio album, Time is the Playground is both a call to action and an embrace of the moment. Marrying nostalgic storytelling to nuanced, folk-infused indie rock, the Richmond, Virginia band embroiders heartfelt melody and harmony with acoustic and electric instrumentation to create a 12-song rumination on time, love and personal growth that’s equal parts urgent epiphany and contented exhalation.

“Everybody says people don’t listen to albums anymore,” mulled Carbon Leaf frontman Barry Privett, holed up in a coastal cottage. “So, the challenge for us was to make something that felt good to get through from beginning to end … to listen to like a story.”

Originally formed as a college cover band in 1992 and with over 3,500 famously enthused live shows together, Carbon Leaf helped to define the aughts indie rock that they ultimately outgrew and outlasted. They first earned national recognition with “The Boxer,” a song that won the American Music Awards 2002 New Music Award and made Carbon Leaf the first unsigned band to perform before millions on the AMAs.

“The Boxer” entered regular radio rotation, Carbon Leaf’s tours grew bigger and better, and within a couple of years they quit their day jobs and inked a record deal. The band’s fanbase snowballed, drawn to their infectious spirit of commitment, empathy, communion, and selfreliance – not to mention supremely crafted songs with ultra-relatable, thought-provoking lyrics.

After a trio of charting albums for Vanguard Records, multiple songwriting awards and headlining shows, Carbon Leaf opted to return to the complete creative control of their indie roots. Guitarist Terry Clark, who co-founded the band with Privett and multi-instrumentalist Carter Gravatt, converted his garage into the band’s Two-Car Studio, where they’ve recorded releases for their own Constant Ivy imprint ever since. Carbon Leaf’s DIY spirit even extended to re-recording their three Vanguard albums in order to regain the rights.

Due in September, Time is the Playground is Carbon Leaf’s first full-length album in a decade, during which they released two EPS and a 27-song live performance album and Blu-ray. Time is the Playground gathers the best of songs written, in fits and starts, over 15 years, alongside brand new ideas. Privett dusted off old demos and shut himself away for months to finish their stories, while also honing recent compositions. With Clark engineering, Carbon Leaf – completed by longtime bassist Jon Markel and drummer Jesse Humphrey – spent a year and a half recording and mixing the resulting songs.

“Thinking about these disparate pieces of music, I began ruminating on time itself,” Privett recalled. “The band’s been together a long time. You mature a bit and see yourself in place on the timeline … rolling around the scenes of love and growth.”

Masterfully melding saturated AC/DC guitar and squelchy Cars synth, “Backmask 1983” is a fun flipbook of evocative era emblems – Farah Fawcett, “Satanic Panic,” Time Life Books, Bigfoot and more – that traverses the simultaneous nexus of Privett’s childhood/adolescence and the world’s analog/digital ages. It’s about morphing into a new person and a new planet with wideeyed wonder and a longing to believe. “Without a whole lot of information, the mystery of things felt so heightened,” recalled Privett of growing up pre-Internet. “I wanted to capture some of that but also have fun with it.” “I want what we create to resonate with ourselves, to the level that we want to play it for a long time to come, and where we want others to hear it and experience it,” Privett concluded. “Hopefully, listeners can glean the pieces from it that they identify with.”

Time is the Playground will be accompanied by the tireless touring almost synonymous with Carbon Leaf, who’ve become a model for self-managing bands in the digital landscape.

Adebukola is pursuing a PhD in Aquatic Ecology from the Rubenstein School of Environment at the University of Vermont, and conducts research in the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory. Her research is focused on studying the effects of multiple stressors on the structure and function of freshwater invertebrates (specifically Zooplankton). Adebukola received her BSc. in Animal and Environmental Biology from the University of Benin, Nigeria in 2012. She also holds an MSc. in Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Management from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
